The Villa Novarina is a new hotel which places the emphasis on cosiness, style and originality.
The Villa Novarina is a design hotel with a limited number of rooms and one of the luxury hotels in Strasbourg. Its real advantage: cosy yet designer decor.
History
Built in 1955 by the famous architect Maurice Novarina, this detached house drew attention to itself in this residential district of Strasbourg, where traditional houses were still being built.
Resolutely modern both in its design and its materials, the architecture reflects the avant-garde techniques of the 1950’s. Its owner, an industrialist with an original taste and innovative approach, wanted to set himself apart from his traditional surroundings. Remember, we’re in Strasbourg, at the heart of a traditional region where the way of life focuses on holidays, community and family life. The designers succeeded in striking a balance between the wish to modernise and the welcoming Alsatian spirit.
The decision to create a building which was both open and transparent was a real departure from tradition. We are projected into the outside world by the huge bay windows which grace the ideally situated façade. As for the interior, the living spaces redefine ways and customs whilst respecting their origins.
In January 2002, this property, having been abandoned for a number of years, was put up for sale. Christine and Jacques Claus bought it, with the aim of turning their dream into a reality: designing it and organising it in their own way to create a guesthouse. After half a century, the building, despite its modernity, badly needed restoring. Not wanting to do things by half, the couple completely refurbished the building, whilst taking great care to keep the original style. Thus, they only conserved the external structure of the building, reconstructing the entire interior in order to redesign the living spaces as they pleased. Their focus was on meeting today’s expectations, whilst offering their guests optimal comfort in an ideal setting.
These major restoration works only took two years, and had just one objective: to remain absolutely faithful to Maurice Novarina’s pioneering spirit.
Since opening, this elegant building has delighted a number of guests, touched by these exceptional surroundings that have resulted from the metamorphosis.
From 2004 to 2009, constant discourse with customers, exchanges and discussions led to a new development at the Villa Novarina. 2009 signalled the Villa’s change of status to a luxury hotel, with a ranking being awarded in 2010.
Surroundings
The Orangerie Park: an outstanding leafy setting in Strasbourg.
Designed by Le Nôtre in the late 17th century, its 138 orange trees were added after the revolution, hence its current name. The lodge was built in 1804, in honour of Empress Joséphine who enjoyed strolling here with Napoleon. The park was subsequently re-landscaped to create a romantic English style garden, and later extended for the great industrial and craft exhibition of 1895. During this period the Buerehiesel house was also rebuilt in the park, and today it houses Eric Westermann’s gastronomic restaurant.
Covering a total surface area of 26 ha, with its centuries-old trees, its rose garden and its flowers, its lake and its rowing boats, not to mention its romantic waterfall, the park is both a popular place to stroll for families, and a small zoo including monkeys, storks, lynx, flamingos and chamois.
